New network of co-operative schools
A FURTHER 112 schools have been given the green light to join the Trust Schools Programme and are now working towards acquiring Trust status.
Trust Schools join with one or more external organisation to draw on their expertise to help raise standards. Organisations in discussion to partner the latest round of schools include: Sainsbury’s, British Airways, Unilever, Marks & Spencer, The Holiday Inn, Northumbrian Water, the Woodlands Trust and the Co-operative Group.
The schools include 25 which will be following the Co-operative model, says Schools secretary Ed Balls: “Co-operative school trusts put power in the hands of those who know best what is needed in their area, by allowing local communities to come together and have direct power over the running of their local schools. They mean that everybody with a stake in the school’s success – parents, teachers, support staff, and even pupils – can all get involved in the running of their school.”
Currently, there are more than 240 trust schools already working with over 400 partners. Trust schools are local authority schools maintained (primary, secondary and special) that are supported by a charitable foundation which appoints some of the Governing Body. They operate within the same framework as other maintained schools but – as with other foundation schools – employ their own staff, set their own admission arrangements and manage their own land and buildings.
Schools are supported to acquire a Trust by the Trust & Foundation Schools Partnership and may receive up to £10,000 to cover any costs incurred in acquiring Trust status.
