Funding shortfall to hit school budgets

Funding shortfall to hit school budgets

THE GOVERNMENT has made “a catastrophic mistake” on the numbers of pupils staying in education after the age of 16, according to Shadow Children’s Secretary, Michael Gove. Gove’s comments were made after the Learning and Skills Council told schools and sixth form colleges that their funding for next year would be lower than they were expecting. He has now written to Schools Secretary Ed Balls, expressing concern about the effect of the decrease in funding on their budgets, teachers and students.

"Many schools planned their courses on the reasonable assumption that they would not be penalised for increasing participation post-16,” he said. “This was in line with the policies of the Department for Children Schools and Families and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. It now appears that they will lose money for fulfilling the Government's objectives."

Gove has asked the Government why it did not budget for more learners. He also wants to know how many schools and sixth form colleges would fall into deficit as a result of the shortfall, and has requested clarification on its likely impact on plans to raise the legal leaving age to 18.
